Mako Sharks
- Isurus oxyrinchus:
Mako Sharks are not protected or endangered. They were cleared for legal entry into the U.S. by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Customs.
The teeth may have some imperfections from normal use (from previous owner - yes the shark).
For over 150 years, marine biologists thought there was only one type of mako shark: the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrhinchus) - that what this jaw is, which got its scientific name in 1810.
A second mako—the longfin mako (Isurus paucus)—wasn't recognized as its own separate species until the mid 19 sixties.
Mako Sharks have the largest brain to body ratios of all sharks.
The Mako shark is the fastest of all sharks in the world
Mako Sharks are one of only five species of endothermic sharks. That means it can regulate its body temperature internally, essentially being considered a warm-blooded animal.
Mako Sharks are “obligate ram ventilators” which means they breath oxygen from the water washing over their gills. If they ever stopped swimming they would die. This means THEY NEVER SLEEP - instead they have periods of inactivity where they rest and restore their energy
Mako Sharks Love To Eat Swordfish
Mako Shark mating cycles only happen once every 1.5 years. Female Mako Sharks then have gestation periods that last eighteen months. So Mako Sharks mate at a maximum of once every three years. Since female Mako Sharks do not reach sexual maturity until 19-20 years, and only live an average of 30 years, a Mako Shark may only give birth 3 times their entire lives.
Only eight mako shark attacks have been documented, and none were fatal.
Mako sharks have been seen swimming up to speeds of 50 miles per hour (80 KPH)
Mako shark has long, thin, sharp and slightly tilted teeth that are visible even when shark keeps the mouth closed. Teeth are arranged in 12 to 13 rows in the upper jaw and 11 to 12 rows in the lower jaw.
